Goodbye Pork Pie… Never heard of it? You’re probably not a fan New Zealand films. In 1981 director Geoff Murphy scored the island nation’s first large-scale hit with a high-speed, Mini packed, police chase film.
New Zealand was at the height of the repressive Muldoon era and Pork Pie’s plucky irreverent heroes outwitting the bungling authorities (until the film’s dark conclusion) represented escapist entertainment at its finest. The massive protests against the Springbok tour, which took place the year the film was released, were an indication of the level of discontent brewing under the surface of New Zealand society at that time. – Richard King
Flash-forward to today… Like The Italian Job, Pork Pie is back with what is expected to be a modern hit.
Featuring actors James Rolleston, Dean O’Gorman (The Hobbit) Ashleigh Cummings. The trio tear up the length of New Zealand in a Volcanic Orange MINI Cooper S as Pork Pie tracks their escapades as accidental outlaws with a gang of police on their tail.
The film will premiere in New Zealand on February 2, 2017. Worldwide release dates have not been announced.
