Rumored to launch in early 2017, Volkswagen Group plans to produce two new models, The Volkswagen Polo R, and the Audi RS1. The Polo R is expected to fit the small car market comparable to the Fiesta ST, but reports from Audi Sport claim the RS1 was benchmarked against the MINI JCW.
The RS1 will come fitted with their well tested and tuned (Audi S3/VW Golf R) turbocharged 2.0-litter 4-cylinder, with an estimated 280bhp, right in line with the JCW. Other options likely to be available are the choice of a manual 6 speed transmission, or a 7 speed dual clutch automatic. Add in Audi’s Quattro all-wheel drive system, and they might produce a vehicle that can better compete, and outperform in road corse racing such as the IMSA Continental Tire Sportswear Challenge where one team currently competes using the factory S-Tronic Transmission (automatic) in the Audi S3. Stepping down to a smaller, and lighter model with the same power plant, and a manual transmission may provide a significant advantage.
