Approximately 7,810 2016-2017 MINI Cooper Clubmans are facing a recall to repair side curtain airbags that may not deploy properly in the event of an accident.
During quality testing of the components for manufacturing, some side airbag components were found to be improperly perforated, and therefore limited the inflation of the airbag. This led to a stop order on Clubman deliveries in July so that dealerships could replace the parts. It’s important to note that this recall is not associated with the Takata recalls that have been popular in the media.
The recall for Clubman models produced July 1, 2015 through July 14, 2016 will begin September 12, 2016, where dealers will repair the covers on the airbag. Owners will be contacted to schedule the repair when parts become available.
UPDATE: These recall figures apply to the US. No official word has been made about a recall in other countries, but we suspect BMW/MINI will have to offer similar fixes where side airbags are required safety equipment.
