While we were basically “stuck” hanging around in the middle of a closed off road, there was some chatting with a
DMV Law Enforcement officer. These are the guys who generally enforce commercial traffic, but have full police authority in our state. Out of the blue, the officer asks our crew, “You guys familiar with those MINI Coopers?” I tried to keep a straight face, but the rest of the firefighters looked right at me knowing fair well that I’ve got a small collection of the “hot hatches” in my driveway. I chuckled, and told him that I was pretty familiar. His next inquiry was if I’d ever seen one roll end one end a few times. Of course I’ve seen all sorts of MINI related incidents having been involved with racing, and all sorts of automotive media, so I cut him off and said, “I bet they walked away”. He smiled, and went on to tell us about his mother’s recent incident where she drove off the edge of the highway, and hit a culvert. Her beloved MINI was tossed numerous times, and while she did have some minor injuries, she walked away from the wreckage on her own.
As a person who like myself who sees motor vehicle incidents on a regular basis, hearing him say, “I’d put any of my loved ones in a MINI.” proves what many of us owners already know. MINIs are fun, MINIs are quirky, but most importantly, MINI’s are safe! Of course, no car is 100% safe, but many believe bigger vehicles for some reason are safer than smaller. As the discussion wrapped up, another firefighter chimed in about his daughter wanting one as her first car. He had been anxious about putting her in a “small” car, but now was excited to have two positive opinions to support her dream.
