Round three of the 2016 IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Series in sunny Monterey, California proved to be another challenge for the MINI JCW Team as all three cars struggled to bring home strong finishes.
Initially, the #37 driven by Ethan Low looked like it was going to have a promising day racing as high as 5th place. Unfortunately after driver change pit stops, and later, numerous pit lane penalties in the last minutes of the race, 23rd place out of 27 was the result for the 37 car.
The number 52 of Ramin Abdolvahabi and James Vance struggled throughout the 2.5 hour challenge. Early in the race, Abdolvahabi had a minor incident causing another racer to spin out. James Vance fought to bring the 52 back up toward the lead laps, but served at least one penalty drive-thru lap. Making a 21st place finish the best the pair could achieve.
The JCW 73 Street Tuner car had the most consistent day of the team. Derek Jones who qualified the car in 18th place was able to maintain a middle of the field position throughout his start. Mat Pombo took over after the mid-race driver change, and fought to hold onto a 14th place finish. Unfortunately the spread out field made it difficult for Mat to make up the 3 laps behind the class leaders that they were down.
Monterey The Street Tuner Class was won by Chad McCumbee and Steven McAllen in their #25 Mazda MX-5 from Freedom Autosport. They completed 84 laps with a top lap time of 1:41.139.
